The Invisible Expert: Digital Wake-Up Call

Meet Karen Mitchell, 54, Management Consultant

Challenge: Karen sat across from me with her arms crossed and a look I’ve seen a hundred times – equal parts frustration and embarrassment. “I know what you’re going to say,” she started. “I’ve known for years.” After 20 years as a respected management consultant, Karen had built her entire business on referrals and word of mouth. And for a long time, it worked.

But the referrals had slowed to a trickle. Her Google Business Profile still listed services she’d stopped offering three years ago. Her website hadn’t been updated since 2019 and still featured a headshot from 2015. Her LinkedIn profile read like a résumé from her corporate days, with no mention of the consulting practice she’d been running for two decades.

“I kept telling myself I’d get to it next month,” Karen admitted. “But next month turned into next year, and now I’m sitting here with zero – and I mean zero – inbound leads for the past 90 days. Every client I have came from someone I already knew. That pipeline is drying up, and I
have nothing to replace it.”

The worst part? Karen was exceptional at what she did. Her clients loved her. But no one could find her, and if they did, what they found didn’t reflect who she was or the results she delivered.

Strategy: I told Karen exactly what I tell every business owner who comes to me knowing something is broken but not sure where to start: “Let’s stop guessing. Let me run a Business Health Check and show you exactly what’s going on.”

The Business Health Check evaluates seven critical areas of a business, ranked by impact: messaging clarity, website conversion, email strategy, LinkedIn presence, Google Business Profile, revenue model analysis, and overall digital presence. Karen thought her only problem was being “behind on tech stuff.” What the BHC revealed was far more significant.

Her messaging was generic – nothing on her website or LinkedIn differentiated her from thousands of other management consultants. Her website had no clear call to action, no lead capture, and loaded so slowly on mobile that most visitors bounced within seconds. She had no email strategy at all – no list, no nurture sequence, no way to stay in front of prospects. Her Google Business Profile had two reviews, both from 2021, and outdated contact information. And her LinkedIn? She hadn’t posted in eight months, had no recommendations from the past five years, and her headline still read “Experienced Professional.”

“I thought I had one problem,” Karen said when I walked her through the findings. “I had
seven.”

Together, we prioritized the fixes by impact. We didn’t try to tackle everything at once. We started with the three areas that would generate the fastest results: tightening her messaging to speak directly to her ideal client – operations leaders at mid-size companies struggling with team performance – optimizing her Google Business Profile with updated services, photos, and a review generation strategy, and overhauling her LinkedIn presence with a compelling headline, a story-driven About section, and a simple weekly posting rhythm.

Outcome: Within 60 days, the changes started compounding. Karen’s Google Business Profile views increased by 340%, and she received her first-ever inbound lead from a Google search – a $4,500 engagement with an operations director who said, “I felt like you were speaking directly to me.” Her LinkedIn profile views tripled, and a post about a client transformation generated 12 direct messages, three of which became discovery calls.

By the 90-day mark, Karen had added $14,200 in new revenue from clients who had found her
online – people she had never met and who had never been referred to her. Her pipeline, which had been empty for months, now had six active prospects in various stages of conversation.

“I spent years knowing I needed to do this,” Karen told me, shaking her head. “I just didn’t realize how much it was actually costing me. I thought I was saving time by ignoring it. Instead, I was invisible to every potential client searching for exactly what I do.”

The most telling moment came when one of Karen’s long-time referral sources called to say, “I checked out your new website and LinkedIn – it finally matches how good you actually are. I’m
sending you two people this week.”

Karen now treats her digital presence the way she treats her client work – as a non-negotiable
part of running a serious business.

Is your digital presence costing you clients you’ll never know about? If your Google Business Profile is outdated, your website doesn’t reflect the business you’ve built, and your LinkedIn hasn’t been touched in months, you’re not just behind – you’re invisible to the people actively searching for what you do. The Business Health Check uncovers exactly what’s broken, ranks it by impact, and gives you a clear roadmap to fix it.
