The Numbers Don’t Lie: 50+ Men and Women Are Building Businesses in 2026 But Too Many Are Doing It Without a Plan

And if you’re over 50, the numbers get even more interesting.
I’m Shelly Berman, and I want to talk to you about something the data is screaming and most people are still whispering. We are living in one of the most extraordinary times in business history. The tools available to us right now, including AI, automation, and digital reach, have leveled a playing field that was tilted against people like us for decades. And yet for many 50+ men and women I talk to every week, it doesn’t feel extraordinary. It feels overwhelming.
Here is what I know about the women in this space: you have been managing complexity your entire adult life. The house, the family, the career, the impossible juggle of keeping everything moving at once. That is not a soft skill. That is a business superpower. The multitasking, the relationship-building, the ability to hold ten priorities without dropping any of them. That is exactly what running a business requires. You are not starting from zero. You are starting from everything.
And the men? Since COVID, something shifted. The isolation is real. The income pressure is real. And now with AI everywhere, too many talented men over 50 are spending all their time building and developing instead of selling. They are optimizing tools when they should be talking to clients. They have wisdom, credibility, and a network, and they are pouring it into a tech rabbit hole instead of a revenue strategy. I see it every week.
This is why the 50+ entrepreneur is not a niche. This is the market. And the data backs it up. Below are the highlights from two major QuickBooks studies published in 2026. Read the full research here: Entrepreneurship in 2026 and How Women Build Businesses in 2026.
What the Data Says: Women vs. Men in 2026
Two major 2026 surveys from QuickBooks, one of 3,000 U.S. adults and one of 1,300 business owners, tell a very specific story. I’m going to give you the numbers side by side so you can see exactly where the gaps are.
Have you ever owned or run a business?
Women: 65% have never owned a business.
Men: 46% have never owned a business.
The gap isn’t desire. It’s action, and that gap usually comes down to not having a clear starting point.
Planning to start a business in 2026?
Women: 25% plan to launch. Another 58% would consider it.
Men: 40% plan to launch.
Women are serious. The pipeline is real. The ambition is there.
What’s the biggest barrier to starting?
Women: 47% say money. 33% say fear of failure.
Men: Similar barriers, but men are more likely to pursue loans and business credit.
Aspiring founders estimate startup costs at $28,000. The real median is $12,000. Perception is costing people more than reality.
Solopreneurs, running the business entirely alone?
Women: 42% of women entrepreneurs are solopreneurs, more than twice the rate of men. Both groups are affected by what it means to run everything alone.
Men: 19% of men entrepreneurs are solopreneurs.
Going it alone affects resources, growth, and risk tolerance regardless of gender.
Mid-sized firms with 10 to 49 employees?
Women: 22% of women-owned businesses reach this level vs. 33% of men. The scale gap starts at structure, not ambition.
Men: 33% of men-owned businesses reach this level.
The scale gap is real. It starts at structure and strategy, not ambition.
Plan to use a small business loan to fund the business?
Women: 47% of women would use a loan.
Men: 59% of men would use a loan.
Defaulting to personal savings keeps growth slower. Both men and women face this, but the pattern is sharper for women over 50 who are also protecting household stability.
Handle all their own bookkeeping and finances?
Women: 48% of women business owners manage it all themselves.
Men: Men more likely to hire financial support earlier.
Nearly half of women founders carry the entire financial operation alone. Men over 50 running lean businesses face the same trap.
Work with a dedicated accountant or bookkeeper year-round?
Women: Only 14% have ongoing professional financial support.
Men: Men more likely to engage outside financial help.
Flying without instruments. Most 50+ business owners, men and women, have no outside perspective on the numbers running their business.
Now Let’s Talk About the 50+ Entrepreneur
Here is what the headlines miss entirely: people over 50 are one of the fastest-growing groups of entrepreneurs in the country. Not in spite of their experience. Because of it. You cannot buy what we have built over decades. Not with funding, not with AI, not with a great logo.
Gen X currently leads all generations of women business owners at 50%, according to Guidant’s 2025 Women in Business report. Baby Boomers represent another 24%. Among men, Gen X and Boomers dominate equally. Combined, the majority of small business owners today are over 40, and a significant share are over 50.
The Gusto 2026 New Business Formation Report tells us that Baby Boomer entrepreneurs are motivated primarily by autonomy (52%) and income growth (21%). Not legacy. Not ego. Freedom and financial independence. Those are the same reasons I built my businesses. Those are the reasons most of my clients build theirs.
And yet the research is clear: entrepreneurs over 50 are consistently ignored by the programs, tools, and support systems built for younger founders. Mid-career pivots, caregiving responsibilities, limited pension security, the reality of building income when traditional employment is no longer the answer. These are the real conditions people are working in. Most programs pretend they don’t exist.
If you are over 50 and building a business right now, you are not behind. You are not too late. You have something Gen Z and Millennials genuinely cannot buy: real-world experience, hard-earned credibility, and a professional network that younger entrepreneurs are still trying to build. What you need is a strategy that uses all of that, not one that ignores it.
What the Data Is Really Telling Us
Strip away every percentage and the message is the same: this is not a motivation problem. The 50+ men and women building businesses right now are among the most driven, serious, and resourceful people I have ever worked with. The problem is the gap between working hard and working with a strategy that is actually built for where you are.
You can be fully committed and still have messaging that isn’t converting. You can be generating revenue and still not have a model that scales. You can be deep in AI tools and still not be making sales. You can have decades of experience and still be completely invisible online. Hard work is not the issue. The plan is.
That is not a character flaw. That is a missing framework. And that is exactly what I’ve spent five decades building.
Two Paths. One Question.
Do you already have a business, or are you building one from scratch?
Your answer determines which path you’re on. I have a specific framework for each one.
PATH 1: You Have a Business and Something Isn’t Working
You’re already in it. Revenue is inconsistent. Your messaging feels off. You’re not sure why people aren’t converting. You might be visible, but not profitable. Or profitable, but not growing as fast as you know you should be.
The data describes you exactly: the solopreneur running everything alone with no outside perspective, the business owner handling her own books, the founder who built something real but can’t quite diagnose what’s holding it back. You don’t need more effort. You need an honest outside assessment of what is actually working and what isn’t.
That is what the Business Health Check delivers.
The Business Health Check (BHC)
The BHC is a comprehensive strategic audit of your business across seven categories: Messaging, Conversion, Email Marketing, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, Revenue Model, and Digital Presence. Every area that determines whether your business attracts the right people and turns them into paying clients.
You get a scored, color-coded assessment showing you exactly where you stand in each category, plus a detailed findings and action plan that tells you precisely what to fix and in what order. No guessing. No generic advice. A specific strategic roadmap built for your business.
This is strategy. Every recommendation has a specific outcome attached to it.

PATH 2: You’re Starting and You Need a Roadmap
You’re in that 25%. You have an idea. You may have been sitting on it for a while. You have experience, expertise, and something real to offer, but you haven’t built the structure around it yet.
The data shows that most people who start businesses do it without a structured framework. They figure it out as they go. And that costs time and money that could have been avoided. Aspiring founders already overestimate startup costs by more than double. Imagine what else gets overestimated when there’s no clear process to follow.
If you are over 50, you also know the cost of doing things twice. You don’t have the appetite for it. Neither do I. Let’s build it right the first time.
Concept to Customer
Concept to Customer is my proprietary framework for taking a business idea and turning it into a real, revenue-generating operation. A clear offer, the right messaging, and a defined path to your first paying clients. No spinning. No building for the sake of building. Strategy at every step with a specific outcome at the end.
You’ll know what your business is, who it’s for, what it costs, how you sell it, and how you talk about it. Those are the things most new owners are still working out six months in. We build them before you launch.
Why Work With Me
I am a Master Certified Business Development and Communication Strategist. Every move I make with a client is tied to a specific outcome. That is not coaching. That is not consulting. That is strategy, and there is a real difference.
Every recommendation I make is tied to a result. Every framework I use has been built and tested across four businesses and five decades of real entrepreneurial experience.
I built a disco dance school, a fitness company, a leadership firm, and Small Business Results. I know what cash flow surprises feel like. I know what it costs when messaging doesn’t land and when a revenue model stops working. I built the frameworks that solve those problems because I lived the business long enough to understand what actually breaks and why.
I also hold a certified emotional intelligence practitioner designation, which means I understand not just the business mechanics but the human side of running one. The stress the data talks about. The weight of doing it alone. The fear of getting it wrong when the stakes feel personal. I factor all of that into the work.
I work with small business owners of all ages. My specialty is the 50-plus entrepreneur who has decades of experience and zero interest in being talked down to, handed a generic plan, or treated like a beginner. You are not a beginner. You are a professional who deserves strategy that matches your level.
The Bottom Line
The data shows a wave of 50+ men and women ready to build in 2026. Gen X and Baby Boomers are leading the charge, motivated by autonomy, income, and the kind of freedom that only comes from building something of your own.
What the data also shows is exactly where the building stalls: no structure, unclear messaging, no revenue model, flying solo without a roadmap or an outside perspective.
You don’t have to be that statistic.
If you already have a business: get the Business Health Check. Know exactly where you stand and what to fix. The $100 savings is available through this Sunday.
