Why do smart, experienced business owners stay invisible?

After five decades working with small business owners, I can tell you this with certainty: the ones who struggle most are rarely the ones doing poor work. In fact, it’s usually the opposite the most talented and experienced owners are often the hardest to find. Not because they aren’t out there. Because neither you nor anybody can explain what they do.

This week we’re talking about messaging. Not taglines. Not marketing language. Whether the people you want to reach can clearly understand what you do – and why it matters to them.

Let me set the scene.

Someone meets a business owner at a networking event — or lands on their website — and asks the most basic question in the world:
“What do you do?”

And the answer comes back:

“I’m a business consultant.”
“I offer life coaching
“I do digital marketing.”

Those answers are not wrong. They are just useless.
They tell me the category. They do not tell me why I should care, whether this is for me, what changes when I work with this person, or why I’d choose them over anyone else doing the same thing.

I have been working with business owners for five decades. I have heard versions of this answer thousands of times. And every time, it’s the same problem – not a lack of skill, not a lack of experience, not even a lack of confidence. And do you have any idea how many say, I help people who are stuck. That is not compelling nor effective.

When the message is muddled at the source, it stays muddled everywhere it travels. On the website. On
LinkedIn. In email. In sales conversations. Everywhere. And that inconsistency is what keeps strong
businesses invisible.

What clear messaging actually does
Strong messaging does three things that vague messaging cannot.

First, it attracts the right people and quietly filters out the wrong ones. That alone saves more time and energy than most owners realize. Whom I work with, addresses what they want, and the outcome they receive from you.

Second, it gives the people in your corner – referral sources, past clients, colleagues – the exact words to describe you. If they can’t explain what you do clearly, they won’t refer you. Not because they don’t want to. Because they don’t know how.

Third, it builds credibility before anyone even picks up the phone. Clarity reads as confidence.
Confidence reads as competence. That sequence matters.

When the message is weak, the prospect has to do the work of figuring out whether you’re
relevant to them. Most people won’t do that work. They move on.

The four questions your messaging has to answer
Before anyone takes a next step, calls, clicks, replies, registers – they need to know four things. Not
eventually. Right away.

Who is this for? Am I the right person, or is this meant for someone else?
What problem does it solve? Not what the service is — what pain goes away.
What changes after? What does business look like on the other side?
Why this person or company? What makes this different from the other options?

Here’s the exercise. Go to your website homepage right now and read it like a stranger would – someone
who has never heard of you, never met you, and landed there by accident.
Within ten seconds, can they answer those four questions?

In my experience, most business owners find that one or two questions are partially answered. The rest are missing entirely. That is a messaging problem. And it does not fix itself.

This week’s reality check
Pull up your homepage. Read the first three sentences out loud.
If someone who had never heard of you landed on that page today, would they know — within ten seconds — whether this is for them and what to do next?

If the answer is anything less than a clear yes, revenue is walking out the door every day that page stays the way it is.

Email and tell me
What does the first sentence of your homepage say right now?
Hit reply and paste it in. I’ll give you an honest read on whether it’s working – or quietly turning people
away.
