From Zero Sales Calls to Revenue Growth

I am bringing back something I used to do years ago, The Monday Tip, but with a new name. Every Monday, I’ll send you a real business lesson from my 50 years working with entrepreneurs. These are the Monday Business Lessons, and they’re based on my trademarked program, The Truth About Succeeding in Small Business®.

No theory. No feel-good platitudes. Just what actually happened, what worked, what didn’t, and why it matters to your business. These are case studies from the trenches and businesses I have built, clients I’ve strategized with, problems I have solved.

They are not AI – they’re personally written by me and based on real client experiences.
Consider them your Monday morning kick in the butt!

From Zero Sales Calls to Revenue Growth – Margaret’s Journey
Meet Margaret Chen, 54, Interior Design Consultant

Challenge: When Margaret first walked into my office, I could see the defeat in her eyes. After 15 years as a corporate interior designer, she had launched her own residential design consultancy at 52 with such hope and excitement. Two years later, she was sitting across from me with tears threatening to spill over. “I haven’t had a single client inquiry in three months,” she whispered. “I am seriously thinking about going back to corporate.”

Margaret’s voice cracked when I asked about her sales activities. “Oh God, I absolutely hate that part. I have this database of 47 past clients from my corporate days, plus friends who’ve said they want to work with me, but every time I think about calling them, I feel like I am being pushy and salesy. I know I should be doing it – I really want my business to succeed – but I keep finding excuses.” She had invested $8,000 in a gorgeous website and professional photography, but her phone simply wasn’t ringing. Margaret was spending her days perfecting design portfolios instead of pursuing clients, and her savings were dwindling fast.

Strategy: I looked Margaret in the eye and said, “Here’s what we are going to do together.” She was going to commit – really commit – to overcoming her sales resistance through daily action. We created a concrete list of 30 names with complete contact information, organizing them into warm contacts (past clients), lukewarm contacts (acquaintances), and new prospects.

The most important commitment Margaret made was to herself: two calls every single day, Monday through Friday, no exceptions. “Think of it like a doctor’s appointment for your business,” I told her. “You wouldn’t skip that, would you?” We set her calling time from 10-11 AM daily, and she committed to tracking every single interaction in a simple spreadsheet. To help with her discomfort, we practiced conversation starters until they felt natural. Margaret also used ChatGPT to help her craft follow-up scripts that sounded authentic to her voice.

Outcome: Margaret’s commitment to those daily calls literally saved her business, and watching her transformation was one of my favorite success stories. In her first month of committed calling (40 calls total), she connected with 25 actual people, sparked genuine interest from 8 prospects, scheduled 4 consultations, and signed 2 contracts worth $18,500. By month three, Margaret called me practically shouting with joy: “I just hit $47,200 in new business – that’s more than I made in the previous six months combined!” But the real transformation was in Margaret herself. She discovered that most people were genuinely happy to hear from her. “One client actually said, ‘I was just thinking about redecorating!'” she
laughed.

Margaret’s commitment to pushing through her discomfort created a six-month booking schedule and gave her the confidence to raise her rates by 25%. When I speak to her now her she radiates confidence. “My commitment to making those calls every day, even when I dreaded them, was the turning point,” she tells other struggling consultants. “Real commitment means doing what’s necessary even when you don’t feel like it.”
